The final major update for Baldur's Gate 3 launched last week, introducing cross-platform play, 12 new subclasses, and loads of other little tweaks and fixes. The release of the long-awaited Patch 8 has led to a resurgence in popularity, with players flocking back to the game to try out the new subclasses and play with friends on other platforms for the first time. In the wake of Patch 8's release, Larian Studios founder and CEO and Swen Vincke says he's proud of the path the studio took to get the game where it is now, and hopes that its success will help Larian tackle its next game.
"Feeling good today about where we are with BG3," Vincke said on Twitter (formally X), sharing a screenshot of the game's Steam player count, which reached over 169,000 concurrent players following the latest update. "Patch 8 got a lot of people playing again. It took a lot of development effort but I'm happy we did it."
"With mod support thriving, I think the game will now continue to do well for quite some time," he added. "It gives us room to focus on making our next big thing as good as we can, and that focus is more than welcome. We've got big shoes to fill."
As for what the studio will be filling those shoes with, word on the street is that Larian is working on at least two projects, one of which is an RPG expected to dwarf Baldur's Gate 3 in size. Beyond that, details are sparse, but the studio has made one thing clear: Baldur's Gate 4 is not currently on the menu.
"That's not what we were made for," Vincke said when asked about a potential Baldur's Gate 4. "That's literally the opposite of what Larian is about. We want to do big, new things. We don't want to rehash the thing that we've done already."
On the bright side, Vincke previously indicated that players could see a new Larian title as soon as 2028 or 2029, but quickly backtracked a bit, adding that the game would release "when it's ready." But regardless of how long it takes for Larian to produce another masterpiece, one thing is certain after the release of Patch 8: There is still plenty of fun to be had in Faerûn (especially with mods).
