Borderlands 4's Price Has Been Announced, And It's Lower Than Some Expected

2K Games has officially announced the price point for Borderlands 4, and it's not $80. In a blog post, the publisher confirmed that preorders are now available, and the game's standard edition is $70.

Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal, but with Mario Kart World going for $80 and The Outer Worlds launching later this year at $80, many are wondering how many other games will follow suit. The pricing discussion for Borderlands 4 was further elevated by Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford, who controversially said "real fans" would find a way to pay $80 for the game if it ended up costing that much.

Although Borderlands 4's standard edition is priced at $70, Gearbox is offering other options that cost more. There is a $100 deluxe edition that comes with various extras, while a $130 Super Deluxe edition has even more. A $150 Collector's Edition is also on the way, and it doesn't include a copy of the game.

Beyond the various editions of Borderlands 4, Gearbox is inviting people to pay even more on the game's post-launch content. Borderlands 4 is getting two Story Packs (included with the Super Deluxe edition), and each adds a new vault hunter, a new region of the game world to explore, more missions, and additional loot. There are also four Bounty Packs coming after launch, adding new areas with more missions and a "unique" boss fights. Pricing for these packs outside the game's premium editions was not disclosed, but be sure to read up on all the Borderlands 4 post-launch DLC information.

Speaking at PAX East, Pitchford said it's a "gnarly" time in the video game industry when it comes to economics.

"On one level, we've got a competitive marketplace where people who make [pricing] choices want to sell as many units as possible and they want to be careful about people that are price-sensitive," he said. "So there are some folks who don't want to see prices go up, even the ones deciding what the prices are. There are other folks accepting the reality that game budgets are increasing and there are tariffs for the retail packaging."

Borderlands 4 has "more than twice" the development budget of Borderlands 3, Pitchford said, adding that he hopes the game sells as many copies as possible so Gearbox can reinvest those funds into future products.

2K is not adopting a one-price model for all of its games, as Mafia: The Old Country is launching this August for $50 as part of an attempt to reach the widest possible audience.

2K is a division of Take-Two, whose subsidiary Rockstar Games is launching GTA 6 in 2026. Many are wondering how much that game will cost, and that remains a mystery for now. There is "hope" amongst some in the industry that the game will be priced at $100.

Borderlands 4 launches on September 12 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with a Switch 2 launch lined up for sometime later.
