The Zombies game mode in the Call of Duty series has become a phenomenon of its own since it first shambled into the franchise in 2008, practically begging for its own standalone game. After a report claimed that a separate Call of Duty Zombies title is in the works, Activision issued a rare public denial on social media.
Dexerto reported on a purported leak by X user TheGhostOfHope, who is described as a "Call of Duty Leaker/Insider" in their bio. The leaker claimed that a potential delay for the next-generation Xbox console would throw off marketing plans for the next Call of Duty game, ostensibly a fourth Modern Warfare title. According to the leak, this led to the idea of two Call of Duty titles launching with the new Xbox, one being a standalone Zombies game.
Replying to a Dexerto X post sharing the outlet's report, the official Call of Duty account bluntly stated: "The rumor factory working overtime. This ain't it."
It's rare for AAA developers and publishers like Activision to publicly comment on rumors and speculation, and even more unusual for an official brand account to do so. In December, TheGhostOfHope stirred the pot with Modern Warfare 4 rumors--days later, Modern Warfare studio Infinity Ward posted on X: "Don't believe everything you read on the Internet."
Despite Activision boarding the windows of the "rumor factory," TheGhostOfHope appeared to stand by the report, stating on X: "Whoever at COD PR came up with denying almost any rumor put out by anybody besides datamined stuff is a genius. Makes leakers look like fools & everybody will forget about them lying in a few years when this stuff comes true LOL."
Whether or not any of "this stuff comes true," the future for both the Call of Duty franchise and Xbox hardware is more unclear than ever. After the middling reception to Black Ops 7, Activision declared that it will no longer release back-to-back entries of the same subseries. Meanwhile, the Xbox hierarchy recently experienced a shakeup, with Microsoft CEO Phil Spencer retiring and being replaced by Asha Sharma.
