Crash Bandicoot Artist Says Fifth Game Was Canceled

A former Toys for Bob concept artist says that Crash Bandicoot 5 was at one point in development at the studio, but has since been canceled along with another game called Project Dragon.

Former senior concept artist Nicholas Kole shared on Twitter that he was working on Project Dragon, a survival and crafting multiplayer RPG. A Twitter user asked if it was related to Spyro. Kole answered, "It is not Spyro, but some day folks will hear about the Crash 5 that never was and it’s gonna break hearts." He also clarified that both games were entirely unrelated and were canceled by two separate studios.

While it's unknown which studio was working Crash Bandicoot 5, several Phoenix Labs developers came out to say that Project Dragon was theirs. Phoenix Labs laid off 9% of its workforce back in May.

Toys for Bob was the developer behind Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time and it sold over 5 million copies, according to a studio designer. The studio became independent and split from Microsoft back in February, and it subsequently announced that its next project is in collaboration with Microsoft.

Crash Bandicoot started out as a PlayStation exclusive series but was later owned by Activision. With Microsoft's merger with Activision Blizzard, Crash Bandicoot is now a Microsoft IP. However, given Xbox's initiative into putting more of its first-party games on other platforms, any future Crash Bandicoot games could still be released on PlayStation.
