Helldivers Dev Self-Funding Next Game, PlayStation Not Involved

Arrowhead Studios and PlayStation enjoyed a successful business relationship together for Helldivers 2, but the studio is self-funding its next game, with PlayStation not directly involved.

Arrowhead boss Shams Jorjani said on Discord (via Forbes) that its next game is "100% funded by ourselves," so the studio will get to make all the key decisions about it. Arrowhead splitting up with PlayStation for its next game is not anything to do with PlayStation. Jorjani said the PlayStation team is "great," and that Helldivers 2 would not exist without PlayStation.

"We're open to working with them again in the future. They are incredibly game/dev oriented. Solid partners. And this is me just saying it like it is. Not blowing smoke up their asses," he said.

Whatever Arrowhead makes next will be the Swedish studio's sixth game, following Magicka (2011), The Showdown Effect (2013), Gauntlet (2014), Helldivers (2015), and Helldivers 2 (2024).

Helldivers 2 has been Arrowhead's biggest success so far, finishing 2024 as the No. 3 best-selling game of the year in the US. Sony owns the Helldivers IP, so if Arrowhead is done with the series, the PlayStation company could assign another developer to continue it.

In January, Arrowhead confirmed it was working on a new game and shared concepts for some of its unreleased games, including a Star Fox-style project. Arrowhead will develop whatever is coming next at the same time that it continues to produce new content for Helldivers 2.
