Following the surprise-announcement of a new Horizon multiplayer game recently, it's now being reported that the next entry in the main series is not anywhere close to release.
Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier said he understands that "most" of developer Guerrilla is working on Horizon Hunters Gathering right now. He said this in response to a question about if Guerrilla had a second team internally making a third Horizon mainline game.
Separately, sources told Kotaku that a third Horizon game in the main series is a "ways off" and is not the current development priority at Guerrilla. One source told the site that some staff working on a new mainline Horizon game, which has not been announced, were "pulled over to help with Horizon Hunters Gathering."
As for when a third installment in the main Horizon series could come to market, a source told the site that it may not be for another 3-5 years, which would put it in the 2029-2031 timeframe and may come to the PlayStation 6. If that's true, it could also be playable on PS5.
Despite some stumbles in the online, live-service category, Sony is still attempting to break through in a bigger way. Recently, Sony CFO Lin Tao discussed Sony's ambitions for live-service games, saying titles like Helldivers 2 and MLB The Show are bringing in stable recurring revenue and that the company believes Bungie's Marathon will be "enjoyed by many" when it releases in March.
Horizon Hunters Gathering is in the works for PS5 and PC and allows up to three players to work together to fight machines. The game, which sports Fortnite-style visuals, has "tactical" and "reactive" gameplay features, the developer said. Between missions, players can visit a social hub where they can connect with friends and prepare for their next adventure. The game has no release date yet, but players can sign up for the PlayStation Beta program for a chance to try the game early.
