How To Emote In Nioh 3 And How To Open Nurikabe Walls

You'll spend most of your time in Nioh 3 navigating perilous environments and challenging enemies. You can tackle the game solo or with co-op friends (or strangers)--and if you opt for the latter, you may want to emote to show off or communicate things like your appreciation. That's where gestures come into play, allowing you to express yourself at any time with just a few button presses. But there are also other uses for gestures, with the most important being opening Nurikabe walls.

In this guide, we'll tell you how to use gestures in Nioh 3, how to get more of them, and how to make use of the ones you have to open Nurikabe walls you encounter throughout your adventure. When you're ready to start emoting, read on.

How to use emotes

To emote in Nioh 3, you'll need to open a gestures menu and select the gesture you want to perform. To do this, hold R1 and then press Options on your DualSense controller. If you're using a mouse and keyboard, you can press the G key to open the menu.

When the gestures menu is open, you can scroll through and select from any gestures you currently have equipped. You can also arrange them how you see fit to ensure your most commonly used gestures are available on the first page.

How to get more gestures

You'll start the game with a solid selection of useful gestures that you can perform, but you can also purchase additional gestures at the Hidden Teahouse at the Eternal Rift hub. This will unlock after making enough progress in the campaign, opening up Clan-related features, including passive Clan buffs and a shop for spending the Glory you earn by defeating summons from bloody graves.

To get more gestures, simply speak to Matsunaga Hisahide at the Hidden Teahouse, select Trade, then scroll over to Gestures. You'll need quite a lot of Glory to purchase most of these, however, so be prepared to unlock them over time. Considering there are also a lot of other helpful items and materials you can buy here, it may be best to prioritize gestures much later--unless you just have the time to grind out Glory.

How to open Nurikabe walls

As you explore Nioh 3, you'll likely come across a variety of Nurikabe walls, which often house shortcuts or secrets behind them. These are fairly well hidden until you've unlocked all the benefits of exploration in an area, which will then mark them clearly on your map. But whether you stumble upon them accidentally during your first visit somewhere or return to them after seeing their icon on the map, you'll want to know how to deal with them.

Nurikabe is a yokai wall with two glowing red eyes. It's very ominous, and it will attack you if you attack it first. It's usually not terribly difficult to defeat, but there's still a safer way to deal with these yokai.

Every Nurikabe wants you to perform a gesture for it. You don't need to perform a specific gesture--you just need to perform the appropriate type of gesture: Positive (Blue), Neutral (Yellow), or Hostile (Red). You'll get two attempts to perform the correct type of gesture before the Nurikabe will attack you.

Unfortunately, you'll receive no clues from the Nurikabe about which gesture type to perform. That being said, you can look around this yokai wall for bloody graves caused by players dying to the Nurikabe. If you see one, examine it to see which type of gesture they performed before being pummeled to death. This will automatically let you know that one of the other two types will be successful, granting you safe passage through the wall.

Nioh 3 is available now on PlayStation 5 and PC.
