How To Find Diamonds In Minecraft - Best Diamond Mining Level

If you're searching for Minecraft Diamonds to gear up to go and face the Ender Dragon boss, or maybe you just want to create the game's largest diamond palace, you'll want to know the best places to mine to find them. There are optimal diamond levels, found by showing your Minecraft coordinates, and these places are likely to yield a large number of the invaluable mineral.

We'd always recommend using Minecraft enchantments, such as Fortune, to ensure that the diamond blocks you mine give you a greater number of diamonds per ore block.

Best Minecraft diamond level

The best level to mine for Diamonds in Minecraft is y level -59.

While Diamonds can generate anywhere from y level -16, they're much more abundant the further down you go, with the most being found at y level -59. At this level, you're likely to run into lava, so be sure to mine carefully and check the blocks above for dripping lava--if you mine these blocks, lava will flow into the space you're in, which can be deadly in a narrow mine. Underground lava lakes in caves will spawn at y level -54, so we recommend heading to y level -53 and carefully mining down to avoid it flowing onto your head.

While there are many Java vs Bedrock differences, the optimal Diamond level remains the same across both versions of the game.

How to mine Diamonds

To mine Diamonds you'll need an iron, diamond, or Netherite pickaxe--stone or wooden ones just won't cut it. For speedrunners, make a stone pickaxe or 20 and mine your way down to the optimal level. Then, continue using the stone pickaxe to strip mine--mine in straight lines--until you find Diamond ore. Use your iron pickaxe only to mine Diamonds for the most efficient use of your high-value tools in the early game.

You can mine the entire Diamond ore for decorative purposes.
If you want to mine the entire Diamond ore block, you will need a tool enchanted with Silk Touch, otherwise the ore will break and you'll just get the Diamonds themselves.

While you can mine for Diamonds, and it's often the most efficient way, Diamonds can also be found in chests in rare occasions and in higher-difficulty structures such as Strongholds, Fortresses, The End city, and Temples.
