How To Tame Horses In Minecraft

Attempting to ride a wild horse in Minecraft will always result in you ending up on the ground. This can be especially frustrating if you're looking for a mount to get around the world faster. Luckily, there's an easy way to tame a wild Minecraft horse and ensure you can get on it without being bucked off.

Taming Horses in Minecraft

If you have ever tried to mount a wild horse in Minecraft, then you're actually already halfway to taming them. All it takes to tame a horse is to continually try to mount them. You can attempt to ride a horse by clicking on them with nothing in your hands. It's important to remember that you can't have anything in your hands that will damage the horse when trying to mount them, otherwise, you'll just knock down their HP.

Eventually, after anywhere from two to six attempts of trying to get on their back, the horse takes to you and becomes fully tamed. This is indicated by heart icons appearing on the horse as you're riding them.

Successfully taming a horse is marked by hearts.
Even if you have been bucked off a horse several times in a row, just keep trying to mount the horse and they'll eventually become tamed. All wild horses begin with a random "temper" threshold, and that threshold is met after a certain number of mounting attempts. However, you can't know what a horse's temper threshold is, so you have to keep trying until it's met.

After a horse is tamed, you can freely ride them across the overworld. If you press the inventory button while on horseback, you'll see the horse's inventory. This allows you to put a saddle on the horse, which gives you more control over it. You can read our guide about how to find a saddle in Minecraft for more details on that. You can also read our guide on how to breed horses, a process that requires tamed horses to accomplish.

In any case, you can now successfully tame any wild horse that you find in Minecraft. What you do with the horse after they're tamed is up to you.
