If Diablo 4's Sorcerer is Taylor Swift, the new Warlock class coming as part of the game's Lord of Hatred expansion is Megadeth, bringing some heavy metal-energy to Blizzard's ARPG.
That's according to lead art director Nick Chilano in an interview with GameSpot ahead of Blizzard's full Warlock reveal. Chilano said when coming up with the look and feel of the Warlock, Blizzard was essentially starting from scratch. After all, the Warlock is a new class that's never been playable in Diablo before.
He said he had a particular image in his mind when coming up with the class's aesthetic, one of different Diablo 4 classes as pop-culture icons.
"I remember we just started talking about it and I had this image," Chilano said. "I had Taylor Swift as the Sorceress, and I had Marilyn Manson as the Necro. Then I was like, 'Megadeth. That's the Warlock.'"
Chilano said it was "aggressive casting."
"I want to [invoke] the guy who's wearing jeans, a cut off T-shirt, smoking by the bathroom, and he'll fight you if you look at him wrong--that's the character I wanted," Chilano said. "Once we figured that out, then it started going into all these things of like 'Yeah, they got soot on them. They're dirty, they get in there, and they're not afraid.'"
It's certainly fitting with the Warlock's playstyle, who can summon and direct demons to control and decimate their foes. Warlock players will have four different playstyles to choose from via the class's Soul Shard mechanic.
The Legion Soul Shard focuses on summoning, repositioning, and chaining demon attacks to wipe out enemies. The Vanguard playstyle, on the other hand, is all about mobility and being on the frontlines by pushing through foes. There's also the Mastermind playstyle that gives players a shadowy demon able to manipulate enemies and control the battlefield. Last but not least, the Ritualist playstyle sees the Warlock sacrifice their demons to gain bursts of power, giving up an offensive pet in exchange for damage boosts.
For more on Diablo 4's newest class, be sure to check out GameSpot's hands-on Warlock preview. While the Warlock isn't playable in Diablo 4 until Lord of Hatred releases on April 28, a different flavor of the class is playable in Diablo 2: Resurrected right now as part of its recent Reign of the Warlock DLC. In addition to the Warlock, the DLC also adds major quality-of-life updates and new endgame content to Blizzard's classic.
