Mario Kart World is out now for the Nintendo Switch 2, and people are making discoveries about it, like an unexpected co-developer and what features the game has and does not have.
One feature Nintendo did not include in Mario Kart World is local co-op for the game's Free Roam mode, Kotaku discovered. Nintendo never said the game would have this, but it's still a disappointing realization for some people who wanted to enjoy zipping around Mario Kart World's vast map with a friend or family member locally.
Many are speculating that this feature not being available may come down to technical considerations. Forza Horizon 5, another popular racing game with a huge map, does not allow for local co-op either.
Mario Kart World's Free Roam mode features P Switch missions and coins to collect, or players can simply cruise around at their leisure and learn the ins and outs of the various courses and environments. It does have multiplayer support, but only online.
Earlier this year, Nintendo's Masaaki Ishikawa said he hoped players would enjoy "taking a breather in between races" to try Free Roam. Nintendo said a highlight of the Free Roam mode are the P Switch missions that encourage players to go to places they might otherwise overlook, or as a means to explore the ins and outs of a particular course to help them with strategies during races.
"When you go back to racing after completing a mission in Free Roam, you'll realize, 'Hey, I know another route here!' and feel like you've improved a bit," Nintendo said.
Mario Kart World is available to buy on its own or through a $500 Switch bundle, which represents a significant savings over purchasing the game and system separately. Some retailers have Switch 2 units in stock today, and you can consult GameSpot's Switch 2 buying guide to learn more.
