Minecraft Music Will Be Inducted Into The National Recording Registry

Minecraft's soundtrack will join Microsoft’s reboot chime have been selected as some of the "defining sounds of history and culture," and will join the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. The sounds of Minecraft: Volume Alpha by Daniel Rosenfeld will join the music of Super Mario Bros. as one of the most important pieces of video game music ever recorded.

Also joining this year are rock and pop classics like Elton John's monumental album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Chicago’s debut Chicago Transit Authority, the original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton, Mary J. Blige's My Life, and Amy Winehouse's Back to Black.

"These are the sounds of America--our wide-ranging history and culture. The National Recording Registry is our evolving nation's playlist," Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden said. "The Library of Congress is proud and honored to select these audio treasures worthy of preservation, including iconic music across a variety of genres, field recordings, sports history, and even the sounds of our daily lives with technology."

The addition of Minecraft makes it only the second piece of video game music inducted into the Library, after the Super Mario Bros. theme was inducted in 2023. Coincidentally, it was also inducted as The Super Mario Bros. Movie had been released in theaters.

A Minecraft Movie had a huge opening weekend, surpassing even heavy-hitters like Barbie and The Dark Knight. The film broke all expectations and nabbed $163 million in the US for its opening weekend. The film now has the biggest opening weekend of all time for a video game movie, outpacing even The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
