New Iron Man Game - Concept Art, Platforms, Battlefield 6 Connection, And Everything Else We Know

Electronic Arts is teamed up with Marvel for multiple games, one of which is a new Iron Man game from Motive Studio in Montreal. It's still relatively early days for the project, but we've already learned a fair amount about the game. We're collecting everything we know about EA's Iron Man here in this post.

The new Iron Man game will join a small group of dedicated Iron Man titles that have come out over the years. Many years ago, Sega released game tie-ins for the first two Iron Man movies starring Robert Downey Jr., with Gameloft releasing a mobile game inspired by the movie Iron Man 3.

But now, Iron Man is set to take center stage once again with a new game from the developers of the Dead Space remake and Battlefield 6's campaign. Read on to learn everything we know about it so far.

When will Iron Man released?

The new Iron Man game has no confirmed release date, projected release window, or fiscal year on EA's release calendar. It was announced in September 2022, at which time many commented that EA may have announced the game early in its development cycle as part of the popular practice of revealing games early to help with recruitment. In September 2022, EA said the game was in the pre-production phase.

What kind of game is the new Iron Man?

The new Iron Man game is a single-player, third-person action-adventure game. EA has not released any footage, though, so we don't know what it looks like in action. It's not a stretch to imagine, though, that players will get to zip around in Iron Man's iconic powerful and protective armor.

EA has six open positions at Motive Studio available for the game, but none of them reveal much in the way of specifics. For example, a senior environment artist job ad seeks a candidate with experience making "immersive environments in AAA games." The person should be able to understand "what makes a game level fun and intriguing," but of course, this could apply to any game. Another ad, for a game designer, seeks a candidate who will "design and implement enemy AI that deliver an exciting and authentic Iron Man combat gameplay experience." Yet another ad, for a level designer, seeks a candidate to create "extremely fun, satisfying game levels that align with our creative vision."

Preorder Iron Man

Preorders for Iron Man are not yet available, so be careful out there with any site or platform offering to take your money to reserve a copy of the game.

Iron Man trailer information

There is no trailer yet for the new Iron Man game, nor is there any word on when one might arrive. The summer season is known for big gaming reveals, but as of yet, EA has not indicated that it will have anything to share about the new Iron Man game anytime soon.

Iron Man platforms

The new Iron Man game has no specific confirmed platforms, but EA confirmed its three upcoming Marvel titles will be released across console and PC.

Iron Man story, setting, and characters

EA has not published the official plot description for the Iron Man game, but the company has said it will tell an "original narrative" that channels the "complexity, charisma, and creative genius of Tony Stark." EA said its ambition with the project is to enable players to "feel what it's like to truly play as Iron Man." Given the game is set in the Marvel universe, it's expected other Marvel characters will appear as well.

Marvel boss Bill Rosemann said the game aims to be a "love letter to a legendary hero."

Iron Man game engine

A game ending for the Iron Man game is not confirmed, but open job listings for the project, like this one, call for people with familiarity with "advanced game engines" like the newest editions of Unreal and Unity. A different job ad, though, specifically mentions Unreal Engine 5.

Who's developing Iron Man

Motive Studio is developing the new Iron Man game. Based in Montreal, the studio released the Dead Space remake in 2023 and is also working on the campaign for Battlefield 6.

The game's executive producer is Olivier Proulx, who previously worked on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy game for Square Enix. Other developers working on Iron Man include Ian Frazier (Star Wars: Squadrons senior creative director), Maëlenn Lumineau (Assassin's Creed Odyssey production director), and JF Poirier (Star Wars: Battlefront II senior producer).

Other Marvel games in development

When EA announced the new Iron Man in 2022, it said it was the first of "several new games" as part of the deal between EA and Marvel. In 2023, EA announced a Black Panther game, with Cliffhanger Games attached to produce the title. EA's deal with Marvel spans at least three games, so there is one more to be announced for the current slate.

EA moving away from some licensed IP

In 2024, as part of EA's announcement that it was laying off nearly 700 people, the company said it would be "moving away from development of future licensed IP that we do not believe will be successful in our changing industry." The company did not release any specifics about what potential future licensed projects might not move ahead, or if any of the Marvel projects might be impacted.

Given the total silence from EA about its Iron Man, Black Panther, and third Marvel game in the works, some fans and industry observers have expressed fear that not all of these projects may go forward. As of yet, however, there is no reason to believe anything has changed with regards to Marvel's upcoming licensed IP slate.

With licensed IP, a company like EA is required to pay the license holder a fee. According to a report, the license fee with Disney for a third entry in the new Star Wars Battlefront series was part of the reason why the company apparently rejected DICE's pitch.

We don't know the specific terms of EA's deal with Marvel for its upcoming three-game slate, so it's unknown what kind of royalty rate or other business particulars may be in place.
