Pokemon TCG Pocket's unpopular trading system will be dramatically overhauled soon, with an in-game notification stating an update to rework the system is coming on July 29.
Trading, a highly requested feature, was added to the free-to-play mobile card game back in January, but it didn't take long for players to find plenty of flaws with the system. It introduced a new special trading currency, Trade Tokens, and featured tons of restrictions on what cards could be traded and with who.
Shortly after trading was added, The Pokemon Company acknowledged it had missed the mark. In a statement, it said the game's restrictive trading system was made to "prevent abuse from bots and other prohibited actions using multiple accounts," but actually ended up "preventing players from being able to casually enjoy the feature as intended." It stated it would be looking at ways to make bigger changes, but in the meantime would offer more ways to earn Trade Tokens through events.
Come July 29, at least some of those concerns will be addressed, as the game's special trading currency will be no more and trading will no longer require extra cards to be consumed in order to trade. Instead, players will be able to use one Pokemon TCG Pocket's existing currencies, Shinedust, to trade. A new wishlist feature will additionally make it easier to indicate what cards someone wants to trade for.
To accommodate for Shinedust's new role (it was previously used for cosmetic upgrades), the amount of Shinedust earned from duplicate cards will be doubled. Players will also be able to exchange Trade Tokens they already own for other currencies, including Shinedust or pack hourglasses used to open card packs.
The Pokemon Company previously indicated the update to rework trading would come before the end of Autumn 2025, so the fact it's coming so soon is a nice surprise. Pokemon TCG Pocket's latest expansion, Eevee Grove, released June 26 and added 100 cards to the game in addition to various Eevee-themed cosmetics. The game continues to be popular, having surpassed 100 million downloads back in February.
More news on Pokemon TCG Pocket and other Pokemon games will be coming July 22 as part of a Pokemon Presents livestream.
