Onimusha: Way Of The Sword Took 20 Years To Make Because Capcom Was Too Busy

A new Onimusha game took so long to release because Capcom was busy with other projects, Way of the Sword's producer explained.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to come out in 2026, placing its launch 20 years after the last brand-new console game in the series, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. While the series' revival is exciting, we had to ask Capcom why it took so long to make a new Onimusha while the company more actively supported other marquee franchises like Resident Evil. During an interview with GameSpot at Summer Game Fest Play Days, producer Akihito Kadowaki cites how busy Capcom has been with why there has been such a big gap between the release of new Onimusha titles.

"There [were] actually a lot of people within Capcom who wanted to make a new Onimusha title. However, as you probably know, Capcom makes a lot of titles every year and it requires a lot of manpower to do that. So, unfortunately, the timing didn't work out because getting the right people and also the right amount of people to create the game just never worked out because we had other titles we needed to work on as well."

Looking at data on websites like MobyGames, you can see that Capcom has published hundreds of titles between Dawn of Dreams and Way of the Sword, making Kadowaki's reasoning completely understandable. So, what changed? Kadowaki ultimately says the right group of developers was able to come together around five years ago. RE Engine, Capcom's proprietary in-house game engine that powers the latest Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Dragon's Dogma titles, also reached a place where Capcom could use it to create a new Onimusha title without running into major issues.

"It all came together at the beginning of 2020. We were able to get the right team together to create Way of the Sword," Kadowaki explained. "Around that time we finished development on the RE Engine, so it was in a place where we could use it most effectively for the new title."

He went on to explain that the team did not encounter any significant issues while using RE Engine for Onimusha: Way of the Sword's development. Sometimes, even when fan demand is there, a franchise continuation doesn't happen because the development resources and tools to make it a reality just aren't there. A perfect storm of the right things seem to have come together to make this new Onimusha game, which you don't need to have played previous game to enjoy, come about.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2026.
