Patrick Gibson's "Impatience" Made Him Perfect For Young James Bond In 007 First Light, Dev Says

The new James Bond game 007 First Light features actor Patrick Gibson in the starring role of a young James Bond. Narrative and cinematic director Martin Emborg has now shed more light on why he believes Gibson is a great pick for the role.

Speaking to Game Informer, Emborg said Gibson--who recently gained more fame for playing a young Dexer Morgan in the Dexter prequel series Original Sin--has "great youthful" energy and a level of "built-in impatience."

This was "perfect" for the version of James Bond being depicted in First Light, Emborg said. The young James Bond players will meet in the game is all about asking "What's next?" and "What are we doing now?" Emborg said. What's more, the developer said Gibson is skilled at getting "really insanely focused at the drop of a hat," and that he also has great comedic timing.

"He's just a lot of fun to be around. I think he checks all the boxes," Emborg said.

Also in the interview, Emborg said developer IO Interactive chose to look at "the DNA" of James Bond as opposed to attempting to copy how he's been depicted in film and books before.

"I think it's not particularly helpful to look at how other people have interpreted the character. It's better to look at the DNA and then say, 'How are we making a contemporary version of this character?'" he said.

As mentioned, First Light's origin story explains how James Bond became the superspy everyone knows him as these days. This story has not been told in any of the movies before.

Gibson is not the only celebrity in the First Light cast, as the game also features The Walking Dead's Lennie James as John Greenway and Marvel's Gemma Chan as Selina Tan. Musician and actor Lenny Kravitz plays one of the villains, Bawma.

First Light is set for release on May 27, 2026, following a delay from March. The game is coming to Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
