See Images Of Apparently Canceled The Lord Of The Rings Game

A new report contains the first images of a reportedly canceled The Lord of the Rings game that was said to be in development at Eidos-Montreal. The game was apparently being designed to be a card-based title with a "Telltale story spin on it," according to Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson.

MP1st found images of the game, which reportedly did not get far into development before being axed. The images are from the portfolio of someone who used to work at Eidos-Montreal, and show off a variety of fantastical environments. The file names for the images contain references to "Umbar," which is a port city on the coast if Gondor. A video from the portfolio also shows the Bay of Umbar prior to the fall of the city and after the fall of the city.

The images and video do not reveal anything definitive, as video games--like all creative endeavors--go through phases of iteration and ideation before culminating in a finished product. There is no telling if the details in the images are representative of what Eidos-Montreal wanted to eventually release.

While this Lord of the Rings game may not be happening, it's been reported that a third-person action game set in The Lord of the Rings universe is coming, and that it aims to compete with Hogwarts Legacy. There is no word on a developer for the project, but any future The Lord of the Rings game would be produced in partnership with Embracer, which owns the video game rights to the series.

Games based on The Lord of the Rings franchise have not fared all that well of late. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum had such a troubled launch in 2023 that its developer canceled its next game and stopped making games altogether. 2024's Tales of the Shire got mixed reviews.

Embracer said more than a year ago that it was prototyping multiple new The Lord of the Rings games. Before this, Embracer's Lord of the Rings boss, Lee Guinchard, spoke about how he wants there to be a renaissance for Lord of the Rings games.

There have been many iconic Lord of the Rings games over the years. In particular, some of the early movie tie-ins were well-received, while the more recent Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War were enjoyable as well--but developer Monolith has since shut down. On the less-serious side, there are also Lego Lord of the Rings and Lego The Hobbit titles that are fondly remembered. Beyond video games, Embracer is working with Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema on multiple upcoming films, including The Hunt for Gollum. Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in Peter Jackson's original The Lord of the Rings series, is coming back to direct this film.
