Split Fiction, Which Had Double The Budget Of It Takes Two, Has Sold 1/3 The Copies So Far

Developer Hazelight has announced a massive sales milestone for its three games so far. In the 12 years since the company was founded in 2014, it's released three games--A Way Out, It Takes Two, and Split Fiction--and they have combined to sell more than 50 million copies.

The most successful of the bunch was 2021's It Takes Two, which racked up 30 million units sold. A Way Out (2018) follows behind with 13 million copies, with Split Fiction (2025) ranking third with 7 million copies sold so far.

"We're stunned and amazed how many fans have enjoyed our games. Your love and support keeps us going and we can't wait to show you our fourth game," the developer said.

Hazelight was founded by filmmaker Josef Fares, who previously directed 2013's Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons with Starbreeze Studios before splitting off to start his own company. All of Hazelight's games have been released under the EA Originals division of Electronic Arts.

Split Fiction had almost double the budget of It Takes Two, but specific figures are unknown. Split Fiction selling fewer copies than It Takes Two despite a bigger budget isn't necessarily any kind of cause for alarm or concern. Split Fiction is a relatively new game that people keep finding, after all. Beyond that, It Takes Two won a number of Game of the Year awards, and this no doubt helped sales.

Hazelight's games have caught the attention of Hollywood, as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is said to be making an It Takes Two movie, while Sydney Sweeney will star in a Split Fiction film.

Many are wondering what Hazelight will make next, but that remains to be seen. Fares and Hazelight are known for co-op games, and Fares has said co-op will always be part of Hazelight's DNA. At the same time, he didn't rule out the possibility of the studio changing things up. "You never know what happens in the future. It's not impossible we look into single-player as well. But it would be done in a Hazelight way, with a Hazelight twist. It's not going to be your typical single-player game," he said.
