A brand-new HD-2D action-RPG from Square Enix has been announced during today's Nintendo Direct presentation. The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is set to release during 2026, but a demo exclusively for Switch 2 players will be available later today followed by a post-play survey to get feedback.
The game, which is developed by Team Asano--responsible for the Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default series--follows the story of Elliot and his fairy companion, Faie, They travel across Philabeldia--a continent overrun by tribes of beasts, while a protection spell cast by Princess Heuria keeps the Kingdom of Huther safe. After a set of ruins is discovered beyond the castle walls, Elliot and Faie head out to investigate.
Elliot and Faie face multiple challenging battles fought with swords, bows, chains and sickles, and more. There are seven weapon types in total, but you can strengthen those by equipping different combinations of Magicite--collections of skills and buffs that alter the way you fight. One such example is the Linked Arrows Magicite, which adds an extra hit to enemies around your target when using a bow.
Faie is more useful than a simple companion. She can fight and collect items, warp around the map, sprint across the world, and in single-player mode you can choose to control her or Elliot at any time. Two players can control one character each in multiplayer mode.
Speaking about the announcement, producer Tomoya Asano said, "I'm very pleased to announce The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, the first action-RPG in the HD-2D series. It features simple and easy to understand gameplay yet offers a deeply satisfying and challenging experience! As the HD-2D series has expanded and evolved, we've gradually shifted genres. We started with a classic RPG with Octopath Traveler and went on to do a strategy game with Triangle Strategy. When we thought about where to go next, we felt that challenging ourselves to an action-RPG would be a good direction. It goes without saying that we want to deliver this game to all the people who enjoyed the games that we have made previously, but I would be delighted if it could reach out to a new audience of gamers as well!"
The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales launches on Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store in 2026. You can catch up with all of the Nintendo Direct announcements in our dedicated gallery, too.
