Switch 2 Demand Has Exceeded Expectations, Nintendo Apologizes For Global Shortages

The Nintendo Switch 2 has sold more than 10 million units through September 30, representing the most successful launch of a new platform in Nintendo's history after the first four months. Given this, it's little surprise that Nintendo also disclosed in a recent earnings announcement that demand for the Switch 2 exceeded Nintendo's internal expectations.

The company apologized to people who were not able to get a Switch 2 right away due to shortages in some regions. This isn't likely a reference to the US, as the Switch 2 has been readily available for purchase. But shortages are annoying and frustrating for anyone who had to endure them, and Nintendo promised it's making efforts to meet the demand going forward.

"The system is already in the hands of many consumers worldwide, and we believe we are maintaining positive momentum heading into its first holiday season," Nintendo said. "However, as we mentioned prior to launch, demand has exceeded our expectations in some regions, leading to ongoing product shortages. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. We will continue to strive to meet the strong demand by ensuring a stable supply of hardware."

The Switch 2 having a successful start, despite its relatively higher cost, was no surprise given the pent-up demand for the console. But the "next test" for the console will be the holiday season when the potentially more price-conscious shoppers look for something to buy, according to one analyst.

Nintendo is optimistic about the Switch 2's future, recently raising its sales projections for the console from 15 million to 19 million for the current fiscal year. The original Switch, meanwhile, will continue to be sold, but Nintendo is forecasting lower sales. The company now expects to sell 4 million Switch consoles this fiscal year, down from a previous prediction of 4.5 million. However, Nintendo is boosting projections for Switch game sales, up from 105 million to 125 million for the current fiscal year.

In other Nintendo news, the company's latest big release, Hyrule: Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, launches on November 6. For more, be sure to read GameSpot's Age of Imprisonment review.
