Xenoblade Chronicles X Update Called The "Worst Switch 2 Edition" As Players Request Refunds

Excitement for a Switch 2 update to Xenoblade Chronicles X quickly turned into disappointment for some who purchased the upgrade, with a few vocal fans online sharing that they've requested refunds from Nintendo.

Players have expressed dismay over the image quality of the upgrade, which costs $5 for anyone who already owns the Switch 1 version of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition. Observers pointed out "distracting flickering" and shimmering, with distorted environmental textures that almost resemble a watercolor painting.

Digital Foundry expressed bewilderment by the state of the upgrade, with editor John Linneman saying studio Monolith Soft made "very strange decisions" and questioning what upscaling techniques the developers used that led to the upgrade's "smeary" appearance. Linneman goes on to call the new version of Xenoblade Chronicles X "probably the worst Switch 2 Edition yet."

On Reddit, some players claimed to have requested and received refunds from Nintendo, hoping to pressure the company into improving the upgraded edition. A few other players shared screenshots on social media of them ejecting the title's Virtual Game Card and going back to the Switch version. The good news is that the Switch 2 Edition runs up to 60fps, and other players have expressed that the smoother frame rate was all they needed from the upgrade.

At the same time, complaints continue to stack up about the upgrade, which adds no new content to the base game (unlike Nintendo's other Switch 2 Edition releases), costing $5. While it's a relatively meager price compared to, say, the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Wonder Switch 2 Edition, which has a $20 price tag, Nintendo has released plenty of free Switch 2 updates for its first-party titles.

Regardless of how Nintendo and Monolith Soft decide to proceed with Xenoblade Chronicles X, no update can fix the game's clunky and redudant title, which annoyingly includes the word "Edition" twice.
