After EA Layoffs, Codemasters Is "Pausing" Work On Future Rally Games

Codemasters has officially announced that it'll be "pausing" work on future rally games, as the recently released Hard Chargers Content pack for EA Sports WRC will be its final entry in this genre for the foreseeable future.

"For now, we are pausing development plans on future rally titles," Codemasters wrote in a blog post. "Rest assured, EA Sports WRC will continue to be available for existing and new players. We hope it remains a source of joy, excitement, and the thrill of rally racing. We've poured our hearts into making it for fans, and we know you'll keep the passion alive."

In 2020, Codemasters was acquired by EA in a $1.2 billion deal. The publisher has begun a new round of layoffs ahead of its next investor briefing, which has resulted in the cancellation of two "incubation" projects at Apex Legends studio Respawn Entertainment. It's unclear yet how the layoffs--said to affect between 300-400 people--will impact on Codemasters.

Dirt Rally 2 was especially popular with rallycross fans, as the 2019 game combined impressive visuals with authentic gameplay to create a convincing simulation of the motorsport. French video game studio Kylotonn also produced several World Rally Championship games from 2015 through 2022, but the Codemasters-developed rally games are generally regarded to be superior in comparison.

Codemasters has lately focused more on its annual F1 series, and the next entry, F1 25, is scheduled to launch on May 30 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Last year's F1 24 was well-received and it made the cut for GameSpot's best racing games of 2025 feature.
