Battlefield 6 Will Bring Back Wake Island For The (Checks Notes) 11th Time

Battlefield 6 is bringing back the Wake Island map back to the series for what is close to the dozenth time, as developer Battlefield Studios revealed plans to add naval warfare to its live-service shooter as part of Season 4 in July.

Wake Island is one of the Battlefield franchise's most iconic maps, having appeared in 2002's original Battlefield 1942 and nine other entries since then, with its most recent Battlefield V version releasing in 2019. Its appearance in Battlefield 6 will be the 11th version of the map, and it sounds like there won't be too many changes from what players expect.

Speaking during a press Q&A, Battlefield Studio senior creative director Roman Campos-Oriola was asked how this version of Wake Island would be different from previous iterations. He said the team looked to improve how long-distance engagements play out on the island map, with a focus on providing additional cover and adjusting the map based on how Battlefield 6's destructible environments play into the experience.

He also noted that the new wave-tech being used on Battlefield 6's Pacific-themed maps will affect combat and strategy in a way not seen in previous games, with players able to use choppy waters as cover to sneak behind enemy lines and escape hostile fire.

"We're trying to be true to the original version of Wake Island, to what made that map great," Campos-Oriola said.

Like some previous versions of the map, Wake Island and the other Season 4 map, Tsuru Reef, will both feature aircraft carriers with operational flight decks that teams can explore and disembark from. Speaking of Tsuru Reef, Battlefield Studios said it is the biggest map the team has created yet, even bigger than the Golmud Railway map remake being introduced in Season 3. For Battlefield Redsec enjoyers, an aircraft carrier point-of-interest and naval vehicles will also be added to the battle royale map.

Battlefield 6's take on naval warfare will be coming in July as part of Season 4, but Season 3 will kick off in May and introduce two map remakes. One is the previously mentioned Golmud Railway remake, Railway to Golmud, from Battlefield 4 while the other is a remake of Battlefield 3's Grand Bazaar, now called Cairo Bazaar. Season 5 will be the first Battlefield 6 season to feature three new maps.

In addition to new maps, Battlefield Studios is promising a list of new features and quality-of-life improvements slated to come later this year. That list includes a dedicated server browser, ranked play for both Redsec and regular Battlefield 6 multiplayer, map reworks for New Sobek City and Blackwell Fields, a spectator mode, a platoon clan system, global leaderboards, and proximity chat, though no specific dates for when any of these features will arrive were given.
