Blue Prince Creator Worked 80 Hours A Week For Eight Years, And He Won't Do It Again

Blue Prince was one of 2025's best games, and making it took a toll on its creator. Tonda Ros said in an interview that he was working about 80 hours per week for eight straight years to get the puzzle game out the door. Unsurprisingly, he doesn't plan to do that again.

"I was working, I think, 80 hours a week for eight years straight," he told Aftermath. He went on to say he does not plan to put himself through the same struggle for whatever he makes next.

"It was an incredibly long journey, so it might take as much time [to make my next game], but I certainly won't be working as hard. ... That's just not sustainable now. It's a young man's game," he said.

The recognition that Blue Prince received "certainly helps" with Ros' decision to keep making games. He comes from a filmmaking background, but plans to keep making games for "as long as I find it enjoyable."

Also in the interview, Ros said his ambition with Blue Prince was to have the complete game available at launch and avoid the temptation of adding more and more after launch.

"I really like the old-school games where they put it out there, and that's the game,” he said. “It's definitive from day one. It's on a disc, and it's timeless."

Ros said he will release "one big final update" for Blue Prince, "and then it's gonna be final forever."

GameSpot's Blue Prince review scored the game a 9/10. Reviewer Steve Watts said, "Blue Prince is a masterfully intricate roguelike puzzle game that reveals increasingly elaborate details and interlocking systems as you peel back its layers."
