Fortnite never had a serious tone, but the game's battle royale modes will be a lot sillier during a 24-hour April Fools' Day update.
The game's v40.10 patch temporarily adds a suite of madcap modifications to unranked battle royale and Blitz matches, giving every player an enlarged head and the ability to ride teammates' shoulders. Llamas are also rideable, and players can literally turn their fingers into guns. As an added comedic effect, fall damage has been disabled, and landing will produce a cartoony splat sound effect.
All of these are also in effect in Unranked Reload, except for the big heads.
Included in the patch are balance adjustments to the Chaos Reloader Shotgun and Twin Mag SMG, along with the inclusion of both text-to-speech and speech-to-text options in English. Fortnite OG Season 8 also begins today, bringing back an Avengers: Endgame limited-time mode.
Fortnite joins fellow battle royale title PUBG: Battlegrounds in adding temporary silliness for April Fools' Day, with the latter adding a limited-time prop hunt mode.
But some might find it hard to be amused by Fortnite in recent days, with the update coming about a week after Fortnite studio Epic Games laid off over 1,000 employees, including the artist who designed Jonesy and one developer with terminal brain cancer. Epic Games cited a "downturn in Fortnite engagement that started in 2025" as the reason for staffing cuts.
