God Of War Trilogy Remake Release Date Speculation, Trailers, And Everything Else We Know

The original God of War celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2025, but Sony waited until early in 2026 to reveal that the long-requested remake of the first trilogy is finally on its way.

God of War Trilogy Remake will tackle God of War, God of War 2, and God of War 3. Aside from the third game, they haven’t appeared on a console since the PlayStation 3 era. The very first thing that Sony revealed about this remake trilogy is that TC Carson, the first voice of Kratos, will reprise his role for the first time since God of War: Ascension in 2013. Christopher Judge replaced Carson for the 2018 God of War and its 2022 sequel, God of War: Ragnarok.

There haven’t been many details shared about the God of War Trilogy Remake, aside from Carson’s return and the news that the studio behind the mainline games in the series, Sony Santa Monica, is working on it. As new information rolls in, GameSpot is building our guide for everything we know about the God of War Trilogy Remake so far.

God of War Trilogy Remake Release Date Speculation

There's no hard-and-fast information about when the God of War Trilogy Remake might be released. But it has been reported that a God of War live-service game was in development by Bluepoint, the studio that remastered the first two games in the trilogy for PlayStation 3. That project has since been canceled and Bluepoint has been shut down. That may mean that Sony Santa Monica will have less support for the God of War Trilogy Remake than it had before.

The bright spot is that this franchise originated at Sony Santa Monica, and it's the right the studio to handle the remake and it will probably have all of the resources it needs to complete the project. But given the lack of details or even screenshots of the game, it may be years away at the earliest.

God of War Trilogy Remake Trailers

The announcement trailer had a music selection from the classic God of War games, but no footage of the game yet. It did, however, feature TC Carson sharing a message for fans confirming his return as Kratos and the long-awaited remake.

"Now look. this project is still in the early stages, so it'll be a minute before we get back to share another update," said Carson. "But I'm telling you, I'm telling you, next time we come back, we coming with something big, baby ... You've been waiting. So thank you for your patience. But most of all, I want to thank you all for supporting this God of War franchise all these years."

What Platforms Will the God of War Trilogy Remake be Released on?

PlayStation 5 seems like a safe bet, considering that PlayStation 6 is yet to be announced. The game could theoretically be held back for the next PlayStation console, but it seems likely to hit PS5 first.

Although God of War and God of War: Ragnarok made it to PC, recent reports have suggested that Sony is pulling back on PC ports of its PlayStation-exclusive games. That may mean that God of War Trilogy Remake and all future single-player Sony games won't be coming to PC at all.

Story, Setting, and Characters

The original God of War from 2005 introduced Kratos, a warrior from Sparta who was formerly a follower of Ares, the Greek God of War. After Ares tricked Kratos into murdering his wife, Lysandra, and his daughter, Calliope, he turned against the God of War and served Athena and the other gods for a decade in exchange for forgiveness. With the aid of powers and abilities gifted to him from the Olympians, Kratos took on his former master.

God of War 2 followed in 2007, as Kratos was betrayed Zeus who stripped him of his powers and sent his soul to the Underworld. The Titan known as Gaia saved Kratos and told him that he could change his destiny if he found the Sisters of Fate.

The original trilogy came to an end in God of War 3 in 2010. During the battle for Mount Olympus, Kratos fell to the Underworld again. An apparition appeared to Kratos and gave him a new quest to extinguish the Flame of Olympus before facing Zeus again.

Given Carson’s involvement with the remake, it’s possible that other cast members from the original trilogy could return as well.

God of War Trilogy Remake Gameplay

There is limited information about the God of War Trilogy remake's gameplay for now. The first two God of War games were remastered for PlayStation 3 by the now-defunct Bluepoint Games. Those remasters had enhanced visuals, but they were largely faithful to the cinematic action gameplay of the PS2 originals, which utilized fixed camera angles. Similarly, God of War 3 was remastered for PlayStation 4 with better visuals and nearly identical gameplay to its PS3 counterpart.

The original God of War trilogy broke new ground with its scale and the first two games pushed the PlayStation 2 to its limits with large-scale boss fights and densely packed locations. God of War went a long way towards mainstreaming quicktime events, which it used to create interactive, cinematic moments during the boss fights. It was embraced third-person combo-heavy attacks with a game play style that was largely unaltered until the 2018 God of War. I

Sony has yet to disclose if the God of War Trilogy Remake will follow the example of the remasters, or if it will be closer in style to the 2018 God of War game, which switched from the fixed angles to a more modern approach by placing an over-the-shoulder free camera behind Kratos. Adding that to the God of War Trilogy Remake may modernize the game, but it may not recreate the same experience. If nothing else, the quality of life improvements from the last two games would be a welcome inclusion to the remake.

For now, it's uncertain if every game in the God of War Trilogy will be released at once or if Sony will release each game separately over a longer period of time.

How Long Has the Game Been in Development?

According to the PlayStation Blog, God of War Trilogy Remake is still “very early in development.” Presumably that means the project was only started a short time before the February 2026 announcement.
