The Minecraft parrot was added to the game in the 1.12 World of Color update, bringing a bright new Minecraft mob into existence. It turns out they really love to dance, too. It might not be immediately clear how to find or tame them, so we've got all you need to know, as well as how to get them to dance and how to get them off your shoulder if the cawing is getting on your nerves. While parrots do have a chance of dropping feathers upon death, that's their only use in the game at the moment.
A field of Minecraft parrots
Parrots can be found in jungle biomes in groups. They're usually close to the ground, rather than high up in trees. You can find red, blue, gray, green, and cyan color variants, and unlike some of the other Minecraft variants this isn't dependent on the biome they spawn in.
Taming a parrot is simple. Approach it carefully, so that it doesn't get scared and fly away, and offer it some seeds. If you have the seeds in your hand, it's far less likely to flee and may follow you as long as they're in your hand. You can repeatedly feed any seeds to the parrot until small red love hearts appear above its head. It's now tamed to you, and will fly towards you and sit on your shoulder. The most important thing to remember when trying to tame a parrot is that cookies are poisonous to them, and will likely kill them.
Minecraft parrots flying
While you can have a parrot on each shoulder, the noises they make can get pretty annoying. Parrots will mimic the sound of some nearby hostile mobs, such as Creepers or zombies, so it's easy to get panicked thinking you're about to be attacked. Parrots don't take damage while they're on your shoulder, which is beneficial since they only have three hearts of health.
If you want to get a parrot off your shoulder you need to jump. Jumping will make the parrot fly off your shoulder, but it will still follow you. If you get in a boat or go swimming, they'll still stay put on their new shoulder perch.
If you want a parrot to stay put, when it's on the ground or on a block you can right click it to command it to sit.
Two parrots and their baby
When parrots were first added to the game, they did not have a baby form and could not be bred. Thanks to regular Minecraft updates though, this is now possible. Just feed two tamed adult parrots more seeds and they'll enter love mode. Shortly after, an adorably tiny baby parrot will be born.
Minecraft parrots dancing on a jukebox
Parrots love music. If you place a jukebox and add a CD to play, all of the nearby parrots will start to dance. Parrots and Allays are the only two mobs in Minecraft to dance, so you could use some of the best Minecraft build ideas to create a disco room, complete with multicolored lights and a busy dancefloor.
There are plenty more tips in our Minecraft guides hub, including all you need to know about Minecraft bees and honey, and how to show your Minecraft coordinates if you've got lost on your way to the jungle seeking parrots.
