The pirate game Windrose is out now on Steam in early access, but many are wondering if developer Kraken Express might bring the game to console at some point. Here's what we know.
On the Windrose website, the developer stated that Windrose is confirmed only for PC via Steam right now. As for "future platform announcements," the studio said "keep an eye on official channels."
A spokesperson for Kraken Express told GameSpot, "The team doesn't have any other updates about Windrose on consoles but do want to reiterate that they are enthusiastic about eventually coming to consoles but are focused on 1.0 launch first."
For anyone hoping to play Windrose on console, these statements leave open the possibility of a future console release. Anything is possible, though, so don't get your hopes up too high just yet.
Windrose began development as a free-to-play MMO called Crosswind, but the studio pivoted in a big way, dropping the free-to-play business model, changing the name to Windrose, and adjusting the game to be a survival-adventure title as opposed to an MMO with PvP elements.
Windrose takes place in the Age of Piracy. Not the real one from world history, but an alternative Age of Piracy, the developers said. The game features a "build-craft-survive" gameplay loop, with combat described as being "souls-like." Players can also take part in naval battles and base-building.
The game also allows players to walk from their boat onto land where they can explore and fight on foot in procedurally generated biomes. Windrose is playable online with up to eight people in co-op, though four is recommended. It's also playable offline.
Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag was very popular, and fans had been looking for some kind of successor to it for years. Windrose could end up being that game, at least for some people, and its demo being one of the most-played during the February Next Fest on Steam showed there was clearly interest.
Kraken Express said Black Flag is the greatest pirate game ever made, and that the studio took inspiration from it for Windrose. As it happens, Ubisoft is working on a Black Flag remake/remaster of its own, and it could be announced soon, according to reports.
Published by Kraken Express and Palworld developer Pocketpair, Windrose sells for $30 in early access, but there is a launch-week discount that brings it down to $27.
