Major Game Releases From Warner Bros. Teased For Next Year And Beyond

Warner Bros. Discovery boss JB Perrette has teased that the company has big things in store for gaming, but not for a little bit. Speaking during the company's latest earnings call, Perrette said 2025 was "a year of reset" for the company's gaming ambitions.

He said the company became "distracted going after too many IPs with too broad a set of studios," according to Variety, though he didn't go into any further specifics. WB has since dialed things back and is now focused on four main franchises specifically for gaming: Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat, and DC.

The executive went to say that the "real fruits" for WB Games will "start coming in '27-'28 when we return to some of our biggest franchises." He didn't name any projects outright, but a safe bet would be that he's referring to the Hogwarts Legacy sequel. Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm is no doubt cooking up something new as well, though the company has no projects officially announced.

The next big release for WB Games is Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, which comes out this May. There are rumors of a big new Lord of the Rings game, too, but that has yet to be formally announced. Embracer owns the gaming rights to The Lord of the Rings.

WB's biggest success in gaming so far from a single title was 2023's Hogwarts Legacy, which was the year's best-selling game overall in the US. A sequel to the game has been a priority for WB since 2024.

WBD had a tough latest quarter, recording an overall loss of $252 million. That was actually a year-over-year improvement, though, as the company posted a loss of $494 million during the same period last year.

WBD is currently in the process of being sold, but it remains to be seen if it will be Netflix or Paramount that gets a deal done. WBD and Netflix announced a deal at the end of 2025, but Paramount has not given up and continues to push ahead with a direct appeal to shareholders.
