Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has offered a tease for the future of the game series and revealed that he wants to see a character from Street Fighter come to Mortal Kombat some day.
Speaking to Collider, Boon was asked to tease whatever NetherRealm has coming up next, whether that be the rumored Injustice 3, a new Mortal Kombat, or anything else. He said he would "probably get in trouble" if he did so, but he said, "We're definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game."
Beyond a new entry in the storied series, Boon said there are new things brewing "with other forms of media and whatnot" for the Mortal Kombat franchise. "So, we've got a lot of great announcements that are coming," he said.
NetherRealm's latest game was 2023's Mortal Kombat 1. The studio, which is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, may have a new parent company soon if Paramount's $111 billion deal for WBD goes through.
Also in the interview, Boon said he "would love to see" a Street Fighter character come to Mortal Kombat someday. "I'm a huge fan of Street Fighter," he said.
Boon went on to address the situation from The Game Awards in December when the cast of the upcoming Street Fighter movie appeared on stage and comedian Andrew Schulz, who plays Dan, joked that the cast of the Mortal Kombat 2 movie didn't come to the show because "they only care about money."
Boon--who has a cameo in Mortal Kombat 2--said he has no hard feelings over this, in part because the two franchises have been rivals for decades, and this was just the latest example. "To me, it's just fun," he said. Also, he wants to see both movies do well because that would prove there is an audience to make even more movies.
Mortal Kombat 2 releases on May 8, while the Street Fighter movie releases in October.
