Next-Gen Xbox Could Use AI To Share Your Best Moments - Report

Yet another detail about the next-gen Xbox console has apparently emerged, as Windows Central reports that Microsoft staff are testing a new Gaming AI feature currently running on their Ally X units dubbed "Highlight Reels."

The feature will seemingly allow you to seamlessly edit a sizzle reel of your most memorable moments in a game. According to Windows Central's sources, "Highlight Reels" are all automatically captured "without leaving gameplay," suggesting you won't need to go to a separate editor to create and post gameplay highlights.

"The Highlight Reels feature allows players to automatically capture memorable gaming moments without any additional downloads, and without leaving gameplay," the source said of Highlight Reels. "This will launch in the next few months on the Xbox Ally X handheld."

Developed by Microsoft's Gaming AI team and running on the company's neural processing unit (NPU), Windows Central speculates that the next-gen Xbox could include an NPU as well to make use of such AI-powered technologies. That is likely the case as Microsoft has hinted that the next Xbox could be more like a PC, and even the Epic Games Store could appear on the platform. The latter is particularly notable because the Steam and Ubisoft stores are already available on the Xbox Ally X.

"Highlight Reels" is being focus-tested in Among Us, Battlefield 6, Call of Duty, DOTA 2, Elden Ring, Fortnite, Forza Horizon 5, League of Legends, Lies of P, Palworld, Overwatch 2, Rainbow Six Siege, and Rocket League, according to Windows Central's sources. The assumption is that it'll eventually come to all Xbox games.

While we don't know when the next-gen Xbox will come out, AMD's CEO suggested that the PC-console hybrid could launch as soon as 2027, while some analysts believe it'll likely arrive in 2028. Either way, the more we learn about it, the more it sounds like the original pitch Valve had for the Steam Machine.
