Nioh 3 - How To Get Summoner's Candles And How To Use Them

Nioh 3 is a tough game, so you're almost certainly going to die more frequently than you might expect. When you're slain in battle, you'll drop your Guardian Spirit, which will also contain all of the Amrita and Soul Cores you've obtained since last visiting a shrine. If you die again, it's all lost for good. Knowing this, you'll need to safely return to your grave and claim your Guardian Spirit, or you may end up very disappointed to see all of that progress lost. Luckily, you can also use a Summoner's Candle to call your Guardian Spirit back with all of your Amrita and Soul Cores intact--if you have one.

Summoner's Candles are a rare resource that isn't to be used in every instance of death. Saving them for the right moments, though, can make a world of difference and keep you from losing potentially hours of your hard-earned progression. So, if you want more opportunities to rescue your Guardian Spirit without all the risk, here's how to get Summoner's Candles in Nioh 3.

Where to get Summoner's Candles

Summoner's Candles can be obtained in a few different ways, including looting, defeating foes, or buying them from specific merchants. Here are the primary methods of getting your hands on some of these candles.

  • Looting Amrita - Although exceedingly rare, you can obtain Summoner's Candles by simply looting Amrita on corpses throughout the world.
  • Defeating enemies and bosses - While also rare, you can sometimes receive Summoner's Candles when defeating enemies or bosses.
  • Trading at the Hidden Teahouse - You can buy Summoner's Candles in exchange for Glory (obtained by defeating bloody grave Revenants) at the Hidden Teahouse located within the Eternal Rift hub.
  • Exchanging with a Sudama - You can buy Summoner's Candles using Yokai Teardrops from the Sudama within the Eternal Rift hub, though it's not recommended to use this rare currency on this unless you've already purchased every other Crafting Guide and Skill Text.

Regardless of how you obtain your Summoner's Candles, be aware that they're not meant to be used every time you die. They're best saved for situations where you have died while carrying a significant amount of Amrita, and you risk dying while trying to retrieve it.

How to use Summoner's Candles

If you've died and left a lot of Amrita and Soul Cores in a boss room or dangerous location and don't necessarily want to try again right away, it may be best to go ahead and use a Summoner's Candle.

To use a Summoner's Candle, head to any shrine and pray at it. Select Call Back from the shrine menu to be presented with a choice:

  • Call Back Guardian Spirit - Selecting this method will eliminate your grave and return your Guardian Spirit, but it will cause you to lose all of your Amrita and recently acquired Soul Cores in the process.
  • Use Summoner's Candle - Selecting this method will consume a Summoner's Candle and return your Guardian Spirit with all of the Amrita and Soul Cores you were holding when you died, giving you a fresh start.

If your goal is to keep all of your Amrita and Soul Cores, go ahead and select the second option to use a Summoner's Candle. As for whatever killed you in the first place, you can always try again after you've leveled up some more. We believe in you.

Nioh 3 is available now on PlayStation 5 and PC.
