For the fourth anniversary of its sci-fi action game Returnal, developer Housemarque has updated it for the PS5 Pro console. Full patch notes haven't been released yet, but Housemarque did confirm that the game features "up to 2.5x the pixels on PS5 Pro," which will result in a higher-resolution picture.
First released on PS5 in 2021, Returnal is a roguelite sci-fi take on Groundhog Day mixed with themes of loss and regret. Critically acclaimed, Returnal revolves around the astronaut Selene and her attempts to escape a hostile alien planet while also dealing with the ghosts of her past, and following the release of the game, Housemarque was acquired by Sony.
Returnal's spooky universe was the foundation for a graphic-novel adaptation based on its premise, created by Housemarque's narrative and design teams. There's also a hardcover deluxe art book available, in case you'd like to see how its nightmarish worlds and monsters were created.
Housemarque is also busy on a new single-player action game that looks thematically similar to Returnal. Revealed during February 2025's PlayStation State of Play, Saros is a single-player action game that follows an explorer named Arjun Devraj, played by Rahul Kohli.
Scheduled to launch in 2026 for PS5--and there'll be an enhanced version for PS5 Pro as well--Saros will allow players to become stronger with every death, as it features permanent resources and progression systems.
