Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami has sold his new studio, Unbound, to Stellar Blade owner Shift Up.
Unbound is currently working on "original" PC and console based games that Shift Up said are being designed to appeal to the "global market." You can watch the announcement video for the partnership below.
Fans have theorized that some of the eerie-looking art mixed in with the developer quotes might be for whatever Unbound is working on, but that remains to be confirmed. Mikami is known for his work on spooky games, and the art in the video surely seems to be in line with that.
Mikami, the CEO of Unbound, said the deal with Shift Up is an "ideal partnership that allows us to focus on creativity." He added, "We will do our best to create fun games so that both companies, working as one, can meet our fans’ expectations."
Mikami previously worked at Capcom on Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and Okami. He later co-founded Platinum Games and directed 2010's Vanquish. Then he left to start Tango Gameworks, where he directed The Evil Within. Mikami left Tango in 2023, and studio owner Microsoft closed the developer in 2024.
As for Stellar Blade, the game launched in 2024 for PS5 before coming to PC in 2025. It's sold more than 3 million copies, and a sequel is now in development.
