RuneScape Dev Takes "Hard Line Stance" On AI

RuneScape developer Jagex has made its stance on AI clear, stating that it will never use the technology to create in-game content.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Jagex senior vice president of product James Dobrowski made it known where the MMORPG developer draws the line when it comes to AI use.

"We've got a pretty hard line stance with the team, which is a commitment that no generative AI will ever be present in any asset that a player can touch, hear, or feel," Dobrowski said. "There will be no generative AI in the game that they experience."

Dobrowski said the team is open to AI use when it comes to "tooling efficiency" in order to make the lives of Jagex developers "easier and allow us to produce better content." However, Dobrowski said AI won't be used to "drive creativity."

He additionally said Jagex was reviewing the practices of its external development partners to ensure that AI isn't being used in a way that could potentially make its way into the game.

RuneScape, particularly Old School RuneScape, is more popular than it's ever been before. The free-to-play MMORPG based on the 2007 version of the browser MMO broke its concurrent-player record in August of last year, with more than 241,000 players online at once.

Jagex recently made the bold decision to remove some of the most unpopular microtransactions from the more modern version of RuneScape (aka RuneScape 3) following a fan vote. Alongside removing the game's widely disliked Treasure Hunter microtransactions, Jagex also removed other gameplay impacting in-game purchases, including the ability to buy items that granted XP directly.

The developer additionally released a 2026 "integrity roadmap" and vowed to address ongoing issues important to the RuneScape community, including improvements to the user interface, an overhaul to the game's visual identity, and other changes.
