Switch Online Leak Might Rule Out A Highly Requested GameCube Remaster

A page on Walmart's website apparently let slip that two unannounced GameCube titles are coming to the Nintendo Switch Online library of classic games.

Near the bottom of Walmart's Nintendo page (as first spotted by Nintendo Life), a graphic advertising the Nintendo Switch Online paid membership includes box art for several retro games that are already available on the Nintendo Classics apps. Metroid Prime 2 and Pikmin 2, which Nintendo has not announced for NSO as of yet, are included in the image, which is still on the Walmart site as of this writing.

Already on the Metroid subreddit, fans are lamenting that Prime 2 coming to Nintendo Classics appears to indicate that the 2004 title won't be getting a proper remaster, as the first game did for the Switch in 2021. The conventional wisdom is that Nintendo wouldn't have a game on Nintendo Classics that it's already selling on the Switch, and we can point to a few cases that support or contradict this.

Wal-Mart's Nintendo page includes this graphic advertising titles for Nintendo Classics.
Nintendo released a Switch remake of Super Mario RPG in 2023, while the original 1996 SNES classic never made its way to Nintendo Classics. On the other hand, the service added The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX in 2023, despite a full remake of the game releasing four years prior.

The most egregious case might be Pikmin 2, the other title that apparently leaked alongside Prime 2. The first two Pikmin games had full re-releases on Switch, yet this leak implies that Nintendo wouldn't be shy to add a game it's selling onto the service anyway. Additionally, Nintendo SVP Nate Bihldorff said last year that The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker being on NSO doesn't preclude the popular HD remaster getting a re-release on Switch or Switch 2.

The rollout of GameCube titles playable on Switch 2 has been rather slow, but Nintendo has occasionally surprise-dropped fan favorites like Wario World and Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. After Metroid Prime 4 disappointed many franchise fans, it's safe to assume that any method of playing the beloved Prime 2 would be welcome.
