If you needed more proof that Weapons director Zach Cregger has the credentials to make a new Resident Evil film, look no further than his play history. According to a reporter, Cregger has already completed the latest game in the franchise twice.
Deadline writer Destiny Jackson shared a photo of herself and Cregger on X, with the caption mentioning that she "talked to him about Resident Evil Requiem (he said he beat it twice already!)." Jackson remarked in a reply that Cregger "said the scariest one is RE [Village], he noped out."
There was little doubt that Cregger is a fan of the series--in an interview, he called himself "someone who has played I don't know how many thousands and thousands of hours of Resident Evil" and promised that his film "lives in the world" of Resident Evil 2 and 3.
But as the director has said before, his film won't be a direct adaptation of any specific games in the series, so don't expect Leon S. Kennedy to be a main character. Instead, Cregger stated that he intends to capture the sense of "dread" from the games in his movie.
Interestingly, the screenplay for Cregger's film reportedly leaked online earlier this month, and the purported script depicts a story with a comedic tone. Cregger's previous films have a distinct mix of horror and comedy, with Weapons garnering actress Amy Madigan an Oscar for a truly unhinged but hilarious performance.
Regardless of how Cregger's Resident Evil movie turns out, he's part of an enthusiastic fanbase that just helped Resident Evil Requiem become the fastest-selling title in the franchise, hitting 6 million units sold worldwide.
