The Game Awards 2026 Sets A Date, And GTA 6 Looms Large

Geoff Keighley has announced the first details about 2026's edition of The Game Awards. The host and organizer of the annual event has revealed that this year's show will take place on Thursday, December 10, and once again, it'll be broadcast from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Keighley said more details will be announced later this year.

The timing is the normal spot for The Game Awards, as the event historically has been held in early December on a Thursday evening.

In the wake of the show's announcement, many people reacted with memes and posts about Grand Theft Auto VI, which some are saying is the most important video game release in history.

The long-in-development open-world game took home the Most Anticipated Game award at The Game Awards in 2024 and 2025--the game kept getting delayed, so it was able to win that award two years in a row. Some people are joking that it could happen again if GTA 6 slips to 2027.

People are also wondering if GTA 6 may be eligible for any current-year awards at The Game Awards 2026. For the 2025 show, games had to have been released by November 21 for consideration at the current year's event. If the same pattern holds for the cutoff being the third Friday in November, that would be November 20. GTA 6 is currently slated for release on November 19.

We may learn more about GTA 6 soon, as Rockstar's owner Take-Two will release its next earnings report today, February 3.
