The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is promising to be a big Easter egg hunt for longtime franchise fans, with Nintendo and Illumination teasing a cavalcade of Mario characters and references. But a new promo for the film contains a brief glimpse at some Nintendo characters from outside the franchise.
A social media video on the movie's official X account features a rapid-fire montage of many of the faces we'll see in the movie, including the familiar main characters and an entire rogues' gallery of Mario enemies and NPCs. If you pause at the exact right moment around 5 seconds in, you'll spot a yellow, red, and blue Pikmin.
It's no secret that Mario creator (and producer of the Mario movies) Shigeru Miyamoto has an affinity towards Pikmin, also a property of his own creation. Pikmin are hidden throughout the Super Nintendo World theme park, and Miyamoto has expressed his desire for a Pikmin movie or series.
A few months ago, Pikmin were the stars of a short film by Nintendo Pictures titled "Close to You." With Nintendo looking to expand its movie slate and even extend beyond feature films, the Pikmin property seems to be a suitable candidate to further this initiative.
Also spotted in that promo for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is ROB, Nintendo's toy robot for the NES that also appears in Mario Kart DS and the Super Smash Bros. series as a character. Some fans are also convinced that another space-faring Nintendo character, Fox McCloud from Star Fox, could also appear in the movie (via IGN), though this is less clear.
Other than the Pikmin and ROB, the promo montage highlights both prolific characters and several deep cuts, featuring Super Mario Bros. 2 characters Wart, Birdo, and Mouser, along with enemies from the Galaxy games, 3D World, and Odyssey. Set for an April 1 premiere, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is projected to have a massive opening weekend at the box office.
