The Switch Is Now Nintendo's Best-Selling System Ever, But Still Trails PS2

The original Nintendo Switch has surpassed the DS in sales, officially reaching a milestone as Nintendo's best-selling video game system of all time. With 155.37 million units sold as of the last week of December 2025, the Switch only trails Sony's PlayStation 2 for the all-time record.

This achievement was long expected, with the Switch shown to be inching toward the DS's numbers in Nintendo's last quarterly earnings report. Nintendo DS, which was released in 2004 and has long since been discontinued, sold 154.02 million units in its lifetime.

For the Switch to dethrone the PS2, it'll have to overtake its astounding figure of over 160 million consoles sold--if Nintendo can somehow squeeze out more than 5 million sales.

The original Switch is Nintendo's best-selling system as of December 31, 2025.
Nintendo's latest financial report also solidified the Switch 2's status as the company's fastest-selling console of all time. And to the surprise of no one, the Switch 2 has already outsold the Wii U after only seven months on the market. According to the report, the Switch 2 has reached 17.37 million units sold, with software sales hitting 37.93 million.

Even with all eyes on Nintendo's new console, software for the original Switch has still been moving in the past nine months, with around 2.39 million copies of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling in that period. The Switch 1 version of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, which released in October, is the best-selling game on the platform in the past nine months, with over 8.41 million copies. The Switch 2 Edition, which is tracked separately, reached 3.89 million units sold.

Mario Kart World appears to be continuing the legacy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, emerging as the Switch 2's highest-selling title so far with 14 million copies sold. Nintendo sold a bundle with the Switch 2 and Mario Kart World at launch and discontinued the bundle in the fall.
